Review on The Roebuck
For years, this Chiswick drinkers' den was the Birdcage, but it has now taken on a new life (and a new name) as part of a mini-group of gastro pubs that also includes Lots Road Dining Room in Chelsea and The Queen's in Crouch End. The interior has been given a 'de rigueur' revamp with an eclectic mix of wooden tables, chairs and benches plus leather sofas and an eye-popping Art Deco chandelier to crown proceedings.
The kitchen deals in satisfying, unpretentious dishes along the lines of char-grilled aubergine and courgette gratin, Gary Rhodes-inspired smoked haddock rarebit on tomato salad, chicken breast with leeks and tarragon sauce, or pan-fried sea bass with a Mediterranean combo of marinated artichokes, sun-blushed tomatoes, olives and toasted pine nuts. Round things off with something like pear and almond cake with hazelnut ice cream. Charles Wells beers are on draught and the well-spread wine list includes a dozen by the glass.
