Set against the imposing backdrop of Exeter's Gothic cathedral, this exciting contemporary venue (formerly the Carved Angel Café) not only has unrivalled views but offers visitors a fine choice of creative modern food based on West Country produce.
The place is spread over two floors, with soft earthy colour schemes, rustic wooden furniture and vibrant modern art on the walls. During the day it operates as a casual, family-friendly café serving breakfasts, morning coffee, pastries and light lunches of baguettes, salads, burgers and the like.
Evening meals are in a different league, and the kitchen rolls up its collective sleeves for complex modern dishes such as wild sea bass on chorizo and spinach bubble 'n' squeak with a cider, leek and mussel broth or caramelised duck breast with a croquette of sweet potato and confit leg, pak choi, port and Cassis sauce. Start with seared scallops wrapped in Denhay ham with minted pea purée and vanilla velouté, and conclude with an assiette of strawberries (including a sorbet, peppered jelly and milkshake).
