The Cherry Tree Restaurant is set in the town of Ballina in north County Mayo, situated next to the River Shannon. The airy restaurant is a high-ceilinged room with open wood beams, well-spaced tables and picture windows to make the most of the views, providing a stylish backdrop for food with a modern accent.
Chef proprietor Harry McKeogh opened The Cherry Tree in February 2000 having worked in such notable kitchens as Fortnum & Mason in Piccadilly and Le Gavroche in Mayfair. Ingredients for his dishes are carefully sourced locally, many of them organic and the menu changes regularly with the seasons. A selection of homemade breads with a tasty fennel and olive pesto opens proceedings, before starters such as calamari and chilli jam or black pudding. Main courses take in a succulent lamb shank or a perfectly cooked dry-aged steak and to finish there is an excellent choice of desserts, as well as a fine cheese plate.
There is a concise wine list to match the food including some half bottle options.
