Review of Crackpots Restaurant, Kinsale

The punning name doesn't really do this admirable set-up full justice: combining the virtues of a working pottery with an intimate restaurant under one roof, Crackpots is a cracking venue driven by the energy and enthusiasm of owner Carole Norman.

Inside, the ochre-washed walls are festooned with ceramics for sale, and all the plates, bowls and tableware are fashioned on the premises. The kitchen's culinary output consists of wide-ranging eclectic dishes based on native Irish produce (plus a few ingredients from further afield).

Menus might kick off with – say – duck confit pastilla on creamed Savoy cabbage with toasted hazelnuts or roast quail with wild mushroom and coriander ragoût, ahead of chicken yakitori with soy butter noodles, seared swordfish steak with Asian slaw or fillet steak with caramelised onions and port sauce. Comforting desserts such as bread-and-butter pudding or chocolate marquise round things off in style. Crackpots is conveniently tucked away between Kinsale Museum and the Desmond Castle Wine Museum – both of which are worth a visit.
