A village hideaway in the heart of Goring on Thames, this sixteenth-century, creeper-clad hostelry is now reaping the benefits of a serious makeover. What was once a local coaching inn has been transformed into a contemporary bar/restaurant with stylish, individually designed bedrooms.
'We are serious about informality,' say the owners, and the Miller of Mansfield now thrives on a flexible approach to food and drink. You are welcome to call in for breakfast, lunch, afternoon tea or a full evening meal; otherwise, simply chill out with a beer or a cocktail in the fashionable bar.
The kitchen sources ingredients from across the land: local asparagus is from Dorney Court, beef is from the Highlands and Orkney, while seafood is freighted up from the West Country. Everything else is made in-house.
The result is an exciting menu that might open with fillet of red mullet with Provençal sauce, olives and saffron or roast wood pigeon with black pudding, beetroot and watercress. Moving on, there might be monkfish with butternut squash, pak choi and pancetta or braised rump of lamb with gratinated macaroni and roasted shallots, while desserts could include tarte Tatin with walnut ice cream.
