Dinner 6.00 - 10.30pm Mon-Sun (Thu-Sun in winter)
According to Swiss chef/proprietor Jon Fratschoel, Ferndale is a 'magical place and a hidden treasure' set high above Keel village. It pulls the crowds with its mix of peaceful accommodation and highly distinctive food.
Fish from the local Achill boats and elsewhere is one of the star turns, and the menu might feature anything from sea bass to swordfish. Ideas are gleaned from all over, so expect Greek-style keftedes (meatballs) with American Indian dips or Mongolian barbecued meats served with sweet potato mash and honeyed onions, as well as roast rack of lamb and Irish smoked salmon rolls filled with cream cheese and prawns.
To conclude, it's tradition all the way, with Swiss chocolate mousse leading the pack ahead of crème brûlée and apple strudel. The wine list offers a whistle-stop tour of the globe, taking in countries as far apart as Uruguay and Lebanon.
