The Mulberry Tree is situated in the genteel Kentish village of Boughton Monchelsea, just 4 miles from Staplehurst and it now sets out its stall as a contemporary country restaurant and bar. In addition to awards from the AA and Michelin, it has scooped 'Restaurant of the Year' for both 2008 & 2009 in the Taste of Kent Awards and is also the Good Food Guide South East Regional Winner Restaurant of the Year 2010.
Head chef Mark Pearson brings a touch of sophistication and class to proceedings, with a repertoire that mixes modern British with European and other influences. Menus change daily using the best locally sourced ingredients available from within the county. There is also an excellent value for money set menu which is priced at £14.50 for 2 courses and £17.50 for 3 courses – both include the Mulberry Tree's delicious homemade bread.
To start, there might be Black treacle cured Loch Duart salmon with pickled beetroot and sour cream or Croquette of Mulberry Tree ham hock with puy lentils & Kentish apple verjus. Main courses might promise slow-roast belly of Middle White pork with rosemary fondant and roasted quince puree or Whitstable bream with caper, shrimp & potato brown butter. A splendid choice of British cheeses brings up the rear, along with a superb selection of desserts to finish. There is a traditional roast available on Sundays.
The well chosen wine list includes a mix of European classics with representatives from small New World vineyards. On fine days, the sunny terrace and garden are perfect for alfresco meals.
