Simon Hulstone put Torquay firmly on the gastronomic map when he opened the Elephant, and he continues to causes ripples on the English Riviera with his Michelin-starred cooking.
The restaurant is hidden away from the main tourist drag and it benefits from splendid views of the harbour. Inside, it has been given the full motif treatment with pictures of eponymous heavyweight beasts dotted all around. There have been big changes here in recent months: the ground floor now doubles as a brasserie, while the upstairs has been transformed into a new fine dining restaurant known as The Room.
Devon fish and West Country meat are still the mainstays of the concise dinner menu, and Simon Hulstone allows his imagination full rein with a fascinating choice of seasonal specialities: hand-dived St Mary's Bay scallops might be served with a creamy combo of peanut-dusted sweetbreads and almond milk foam, while line-caught sea bass could appear with warmed gazpacho sauce and olive oil sorbet.
Meat and game are equally enticing, with dishes ranging from rump of Cornish lamb in celeriac purée with braised neck croquette to loin of Wallace's Farm venison with vanilla-roasted butternut squash and baby beetroot jus. Floral fragrances and spicy flavours point up desserts like sweet cicely and star anise pannacotta with mandarin and carrot sorbet or rose and almond tansy pudding with lemon verbena ice cream, and the lively wine list has strong contingents from France and Italy.
