Mobile Food Guide Review of Custard

Several key players from Rick Stein's Padstow entourage recently decided to go it alone and form their own outfit. The result is Custard - 'an English diner'. Situated right in the centre of town, it's an all-day set-up with a relaxed 'retro lounge atmosphere' and a dedication to no-frills seasonal food.

Call in for breakfast, morning coffee, afternoon tea and cakes or go for something more serious. Lunch and dinner menus fly the flag for Cornwall with the likes of crab salad, whole plaice with samphire and brown shrimps, grilled haddock with cockles, and rib of beef with baby carrots and cottage pie.

Devon contributes Creedy Carver duck breast (served with bubble 'n' squeak), while 'custard' naturally has its say when it comes to desserts: try it with pear and blackberry crumble or bread-and-butter pudding. The snazzy little wine list gleans plenty of good stuff from Europe, but also shows off pickings from the nearby Camel Valley Vineyard.
