Currently the hottest ticket in Harrogate, Sasso occupies a unobtrusive basement on Princes Square. Inside it has been neatly done out with neutral colours, unshowy wooden furniture and a few pieces of artwork to break up the wall space. Stefano Lancellotti cooks, runs the show and finds time to greet and chat, and he is supported by an able, enthusiastic team who are on-the-ball.
His cooking is right on target, ingredients are out of the top drawer and homemade pasta is one of the highlights. Lobster and courgette ravioli in a light lobster broth is a winner, likewise fusilli with baby broad beans and Pecorino or tagliolini with roast duck sauce, garlic and Tuscan herbs.
The varied choice of antipasti includes a knock-out salad of octopus with potato, roasted peppers, bacon and shallots, while centrepiece dishes could range from duck breast in balsamic vinegar with dried plums and crispy bacon to wild sea bass fillets encrusted with porcini mushrooms and served with herby garlic butter. Desserts such as lemon tart and tiramisł are copybook creations, but don't miss the dazzling semifreddo with caramelised walnuts, toffee and Amaretto sauce. Fixed-price lunches are outstanding value and the splendid 50-bin wine list is an impressive tour around some of the best vineyards in Italy.
