Built around 1739, the stone-built West Bay has been pleasing travellers and tourists for more than 250 years. It stands in a great spot on the old Abbotsbury to Weymouth road, next to the dramatic East Cliff and within easy reach of the harbour and the Jurassic Coast. Richard and Lorraine Barnard have turned the pub into a must-visit destination in this part of Dorset, and it now has a fine reputation for food, drink and overnight accommodation.
Inside, there's a spacious wood-floored bar area and a pleasantly informal restaurant with 'country kitchen' furniture. Menus are displayed on blackboards and fish from the local boats is the main attraction. The owners' son Michael learned his culinary craft at The Ivy and with Michael Caines at Gidleigh Park – so expect plenty of flair and creativity.
To begin, there might be seared curried scallops with lime yoghurt or dressed Lyme Bay crab with gazpacho sauce and herbed cream cheese, while main courses might range from grilled plaice with hazelnut or pesto butter to fillets of sea bass 'en papillote' with ginger, chilli, coriander and pak choi. Apart from fish, the choice extends to steaks, honey-roast duck breast with sweet potato mash and pancetta jus or spinach and Ricotta tortellini with roasted vegetables. Locally brewed Palmers ales are on draught and the well-chosen wine list includes several by the glass.
