Jason King and Simon Page have turned this one-time hunting cottage down winding lanes between Basingstoke and Newbury into a go-ahead dining pub with strong local affiliations. Everything here is on-the-money, from the free-range hens and beehives out in the developing kitchen garden to the network of trusted Hampshire producers who supply most of the kitchen's needs.
Menus change from day to day as supplies come and go, and there's much to enjoy. Starters on the frequently re-written blackboard might range from twice-baked Marksbury Cheddar and spring onion soufflé to potted Padworth trout, while main courses could see local venison 'potpie' laced with real ale alongside seared Brixham turbot on mash samphire sautéed in butter and garlic.
Desserts have a fruity, homespun feel - home-grown rhubarb and raspberry jelly with rose 'fairy floss' and pouring cream or steamed apple and syrup sponge. The drinks list encompasses some keenly chosen global wines as well as Australian 'husk' teas.
Should you wish to extend your stay there are two beautiful rooms available at The Wellington Arms.
