Fans of Test Match Special will no doubt recognise Larwood and Voce as the Nottinghamshire fast bowlers who skittled out the Aussies in the 1932-33 Ashes series. This revitalised pub - just a slog from Trent Bridge's hallowed ground - pays homage to their efforts, although its main business is satisfying hungry appetites and thirsts with a splendid array of food and drink in 'shabby chic' surroundings.
Set up by some big players from the East Midlands' pub and restaurant scene, Larwood & Voce is as flexible as they come, offering breakfast and brunch at weekends, an all-day bar menu (served until 6.00pm), family-friendly Sunday lunches and more ambitious restaurant-style evening meals. There's also a private function room and plenty of seating outside for sunny days.
Local produce is at the heart of things (the pub even has its own allotment), and the line-up of daytime stews, pies, roasts, sarnies and the like gives way to twice-baked Hartington Stilton soufflé with roast walnut and pear salad, pot-roast beef rib with parsley mash and brown onions, and local smoked haddock with colcannon and poached egg. Desserts are homely offerings like blackberry and blueberry jelly with ice cream, and there are plenty of real ales, bespoke cocktails and decent wines to satisfy the drinkers.
