The village of Sawdon is on the edge of Wykeham Forest with its stunning viewpoint over Dalby Dale, it is well placed base to visit York and the Dinosaur Coast, the resort town of Scarborough or simply enjoy local walks and a pint in the bar at The Anvil Inn, the old blacksmith's workshop dating from the 1700s. There's lots of exposed stonework and a wood floor in the bar, a comfortable, elegant dining room, a cosy wood burner for chilly evenings and candlelit antique tables which all helps to create a relaxed atmosphere.
The restaurant is small and intimate, Mark Wilson mans the stoves and he sources his supplies as nearby as possible pulling in game from Dalby Forrest, locally farmed beef and pork, fish is tip top being so close to the coast and even the occasional "present" from the village finds its way onto the menu.
Sunday lunch is an ever popular event at The Anvil kicking off with perhaps salad of Orkney herrings in a Madeira marinade and then prime roast topside of Wilton beef, Yorkshire pudding & gravy before rounding off with steamed apricot, pecan & toffee sponge with custard. Retire to the lounge and stretch out on the sofa in front of another log fire!
