The Voujon - Oakham

Opened in 1995, the flagship of the Voujon mini-chain brings a touch of upmarket Indian cuisine to Oakham. The decor fuses east and west, contemporary and traditional, with comfortable leather sofas in the bar and lots of fashionable trappings in the open-plan restaurant: book well ahead if you want to reserve a table by the window.

The lengthy menu trawls its way through all the curry house staples, with tandooris, baltis and tawa specialities added to the mix of dhansaks, biryanis and the like. Also look for the list of chef's specials, which includes everything from jhinga lajawab (king prawns roasted in the tandoori and cooked in a mild sauce with cream) to kabuli bhuna (chicken or lamb with peas and cauliflower). A great-value, fixed-priced banquet menu is offered on Wednesday nights. There is a second branch in Stamford, Lincolnshire.
