A 'very friendly' new restaurant on the Burton scene, with great food and a laid-back atmosphere, 99 Station Street is handily placed in the old town, a stone's throw from the railway station. The owners are great champions of local and seasonal food, and their regularly changing menus highlight the best of British produce.
Starters such as homemade pork pie or Cornish scallops on celeriac purée with butter sauce might precede Bromley Hayes ribeye steak on mash with port sauce, home-smoked salmon fillet with watercress and wholegrain mustard sauce or roast partridge stuffed with a plum stuffing. For pudding, expect anything from pear tarte Tatin to lemon and mint tart.
At lunchtime, you can also get trencherman sandwiches, and there are homemade cakes to go with tea or coffee. To match the food is a short, well-chosen list of wines procured from single growers. Regular live music and comedy nights are an added attraction.
