Atul Kocchar of Michelin-starred Benares in Mayfair has headed south to the Hampshire countryside for his second venture - a fascinating restaurant in the beguiling surroundings of Wickham Vineyard. Vatika (the name is Sanskrit/Hindi for 'vineyard' or 'orchard') makes the most of its country setting, with great views from the sliding glass windows of the clean-lined dining room and the alfresco terrace.
'British dishes with a unique Indian twist' is the promise, and Kocchar's protégé Jitin Joshi is already turning heads with his dazzling food. The short menu makes for mouthwatering reading: among the starters might be 'Sardine - Olive' (sardine rollmops with olive raisin purée and semolina blinis) or 'Monkfish - Cucumber' (tamarind-poached monkfish cheeks with steamed raita and iced cucumber), while groundbreaking mains could include Goan spiced lobster tail with Granny Smith confit and sweet 'n sour lentils or 'Chicken - Corn' (charred basil chicken with stewed corn and pickled avocado).
There's no letting up when it comes to desserts, which could thrill with chilled mango soup and warm sago risotto or 64% chocolate tart with cardamom yoghurt and candied ginger. Backing up the food is a sharp global wine list hand-picked by Benares' sommelier Constanzo Scala.
