Mobile Food Guide Review of The Marquis at Alkham

The Marquis at Alkham

Following a spectacular transformation, the old Marquis of Granby pub has morphed into the Marquis at Alkham - a striking contemporary restaurant with five luxury bedrooms to boot. The old interior has been brightened up with fine furnishings and beautiful fabrics to create a touch of boutique chic in the heart of the Kent countryside.

Chef Charles Lakin worked at the Michelin-starred Star at Harome and also the Feversham Arms in Yorkshire and he is now turning foodie heads in Kent with his exciting modern British food. Locally sourced produce forms the backbone of his efforts and his seasonal menus highlight what is at its peak. Home-cured Kentish trout gravlax comes with a Dijon mustard dressing, Deal lobster appears in ravioli with a cognac-enriched bisque, while fillet of Ramsgate grey mullet is partnered by pan-fried squid, warm soused cherry tomatoes and a herb risotto. Dexter beef is reared in a neighbouring farm by the President of The Dexter Cattle Society.. it doesn't get much better!

Away from fish, the kitchen also conjures up crispy pig's trotter with cauliflower piccalilli and fried quail's egg, and loin of Alkham Valley rabbit with boudin noir, cider potatoes, celeriac purée and lovage sauce. To finish, there are desserts ranging from rice pudding with gin-poached plums to pear tarte Tatin with mulled wine syrup. To go with the food, there are locally brewed real ales, plus an eclectic wine list that covers everything from the New World to vineyards on the restaurant's doorstep.

The Marquis has now been awarded a 'Rising star' in the 2010 Michelin guide.
