Richard Corrigan's eagerly awaited new restaurant, Corrigan's Mayfair, occupies the site of one of London's most iconic dining rooms, Chez Nico at Ninety, attached to the sumptuous Grosvenor House hotel just off Park Lane - a top-end address if ever there was one.
It's a luxury destination inspired by the theme of game and hunting lodges, complete with artworks from Corrigan's own collection, as well as antlers, table lamps covered in feathers and a frieze carving. The menu also picks up the wild gutsy theme with its cavalcade of seasonal ingredients and unfussy, but refined modern dishes. Oysters, clams and 'our herrings' are fitting openers, before ox tongue with cauliflower and Reform sauce or crubeens (Irish pickled pig's trotters) with beetroot and horseradish.
Mains are equally forthright in design and execution: butter-poached haddock is served with lobster and creamed parsnip, grouse pie comes with ceps, and mallard is paired with orange and chicory. To finish, quince tart with Sauternes ice cream is an eye-catcher, or you might prefer the festive wintertime comforts of warm carrot cake with pickled walnuts and clementines. The wine list exudes real class and nails its colours to the mast when it comes to supporting organic and biodynamic producers.
