The latest in a little group of West London gastropubs owned by local boys Mark Reynolds, Nick Fox and Tom Peake, the Avalon is is the latest incarnation of one-time Balham boozer, the George. It's been given an imposing new look, with a vast bar dominated by a walnut counter, original Victorian fireplaces and Pre-Raphaelite wallpaper.
Drinkers who want a nibble with their pint can tuck into potted crab, Cornish pasties, mini chorizo and burgers. Those wanting something more can opt for the handsome dining room with its mahogany cabinets and glazed tiled walls. Homemade pies and oysters from Wright Brothers are noted specialities, but the menu also shows its class with the likes of pan-fried squid, chorizo and rocket or peppered venison carpaccio, ahead of braised rabbit with smoked pancetta and pearl barley, Taleggio and pear risotto or baked lemon sole with brown shrimp and tartare butter.
Steaks are also big sellers (try the Wagyu rump), while puddings bring on, say, banana tarte Tatin with rum ice cream, apple crumble or coriander and hazelnut roast pear with crème fraîche. The wine list is a decent slate, with reliable drinking at fair prices. A big garden is due to open in time for the summer sunshine.
