Review on Chez Mumtaj
Chez Mumtaj is sibling to the long standing Mumtaj Tandoori restaurant situated a little further along London Road in the historic market town of St Albans. Serving modern French-Asian cuisine it's a beautifully sculptured restaurant with a glamorous 1920's inspired décor. It also features The Saffron Lounge and Champagne bar with rich mahogany and antique mirror panelled walls, together with luxurious leather banquette seating.
Executive Chef Chad Rahman's cuisine is based on natural seasonal flavours that takes diners on a journey through South East Asian and Europe, whilst incorporating nuances of Pan Asian and European cuisines. Like its older brother, Chez Mumtaj has received numerous accolades for its exquisite dishes, including two coveted AA Rosettes and was also the recipient of the Best Spice Restaurant for the South East in the 2013 Curry Awards.
Kick off with Bird's Nest Quail Scotch Egg, chef's own recipe of a classic Quail egg encased in decadent truffle and foie gras, black leg chicken mince coated in panko breadcrumbs nestled in crispy kataifi pastry and wasabi remoulade. Main courses take in Kasundi Black Cod, wild catch Alaskan roasted Black Cod, kaffir-lime tomato curry emulsion, freshly grated coconut rice, coriander and mint Braeburn apple and mango vanilla salsa and pickled samphire grass or for meat-lovers there's spice-crusted Royal Estate Windsor Great Park saddle of venison, masala crushed charlotte potatoes and scallions, spinach, confit of butternut squash puree, chocolate-tamarind and red wine jus. To finish enjoy mango brulee or Kheer, an Indian style rice pudding with rhubarb ice cream.
Chez Muntaj has a well thought out wine list to complement the dishes together with bottled beers, ciders, premium spirits and a cocktail menu.
