Review on That Little Place
That Little Place is a delightful unassuming gem in the heart of the affluent commuter town of Harpenden in the City of St Albans. With a glass frontage the interior is light and airy, decked out in a pale green palette enlivened by paintings of local scenes adorning the walls. Seating just 38 diners, tables are simply laid and set against banquette style seating or high backed wooden chairs.
Chef proprietor is Alec Goodhand who makes regular guest appearances on BBC 3 Counties Radio with Nick Coffer's Weekend Kitchen. A keen supporter of local food and drink, freshness and quality are fundamental to the food he cooks. It is certainly achieving results, for the restaurant has picked up a clutch of local awards of late and it remains a firm favourite with the denizens of Harpenden.
From the a la carte menu choose a starter of smoked trout with a horseradish crème frais, sustainably sourced smoked trout on potato blinis with horseradish crème frais, cress and radish shavings or haggis ravioli, Scottish haggis in homemade ravioli with a cream of mushroom sauce. As they were the recipient of the Gold and Bronze awards in 2014 for the their pies you might decide to choose the beef & ale pie, Hammonds End shin of beef in a rich home brewed ale gravy with carrots, shortcrust pastry top and served with Maris Piper chips. Fish lovers could opt for the salmon fillet and garlic sauce, pan fried salmon fillet on mash with a garlic and parsley sauce. To finish there are desserts in the shape of white chocolate and Bailey's mousse, homemade white chocolate and Bailey's mousse with raspberry coulis and shortbread or the intriguing Chocolate Numpty Bump, British peanut and honeycomb in salty and sweet chocolate paired with vanilla ice cream.
To complement the dishes there's a concise wine list sourced from small independent vineyards around the world.
