Review on Restaurant James Sommerin

Located on the ground floor of an historic Edwardian building on the Esplanade within Penarth's multi-million pound Beachcliff development, Restaurant James Sommerin opened its doors in May 2014 following a £400,000 refurbishment. This is the first solo venture from James, a former young Scottish Chef of the Year and more recently Head Chef of the Crown at Whitebrook where he held a prestigious Michelin star for 7 years. The restaurant is already picking up awards and is No 7 in the Times list of "Britain's 20 Best Places to Eat by the Beach", the recipient of four prestigious AA rosettes, as well as a Michelin star in the 2017 Guide.

Inside it's light and airy with a modern dιcor featuring plush velvet covered chairs and cream banquette seating along the walls, with the windows above offering panoramic views of the Severn Estuary. Tables are laid with crisp white linen and pretty Himalayan candles and there's a viewing window into the kitchen, where you can catch glimpses of the chefs at work.

Quality of produce is paramount in the ingredients James uses for his modern British dishes and he will source locally wherever possible. Opting for the five course tasting menu, diners can enjoy dishes in the shape of braised pigs head, celeriac, apple, star annis, monk fish, seaweed, grilled leek, curry, puffed grains, strawberry, lime, chocolate, vanilla and finishing with banana, stout, toffee and macadamia nut. Diners also have a choice of a seven course tasting menu or the surprise 10 course tasting menu, with the option of accompanying wine pairing. There's a thoughtfully chosen wine list featuring wine from around the globe, with a focus on small producers including biodynamic, organic and boutique vineyards.

Restaurant James Sommerin is also able to offer guests nine stylish bedrooms, with five of them benefitting from glorious views across the Estuary.
