Review on The Star Inn the City

The historical city of York saw Chef Proprietor, Andrew Pern open a sibling to his critically acclaimed Star Inn situated in Harome. Aptly named The Star Inn the City, it opened its doors in September 2013, a joint venture with his old catering college classmate Justin Brosenitz, set in a glorious location within an 1836 pump house on the banks of the River Ouse, close to the 19th century Lendal Bridge.

The modern interiors have been designed by Yorkshire based Rachel McLane in vibrant colours of green red and blue, with huge plate-glass windows looking out on to Museum Gardens. The pre-Victorian building has a choice of rooms available including the new purpose built light and airy Garden Room, or the River Room located in the original Grade II listed building, with magnificent wood panelled walls and arched windows and there's private dining rooms on the first floor balcony. When the sun shines guests can take advantage of al fresco dining on the terrace to enjoy the splendid views.

On the food front, it's an all day affair with the kitchen kicking off with breakfast, through to lunch and dinner, making excellent use of fresh local ingredients. Typically you might begin with seared sea scallops, spiced Yorkshire pork cheek, cauliflower purée and piccalilli vinaigrette or from the land choose Nidderdale chicken liver pâté with elderflower jelly, croûtes, and goosegog relish. Main courses take in roast fillet of Yorkshire pork with garden sage bubble 'n' squeak, Granny Smith purée, black pudding faggot, cider gravy or pan-fried breast of Leven Farm Beverley reared duck, pickled cherries, anise carrot purée, citrus sausage roll and traditional Yorkshire sauce. There are tempting desserts on offer in the shape of summer fruit terrine with Pimm's No.1 paired with garden mint ice cream or white chocolate and raspberry knickerbocker glory with ginger parkin crumbs.

To complement the food there's zingy cocktails and a knowledgeably garnered wine list featuring a collection from all the major vineyards around the globe.
