'We have been prolific culinary globetrotters with magpie gathering tendencies,' proclaim the owners of this ground-breaking vegetarian restaurant. Terre à Terre has been breaking rules and re-defining the genre since it opened as a BYO café just off Brighton seafront more than 15 years and they recently scooped 'Best for Vegetarian' at the Observer Food Monthly Awards 2008.
Forget faddy clichés and images of leaden wholemeal quiches, this place deals in trailblazing 'flesh-free' food, with an extravagant global menu and dishes that are shot through with palate-challenging flavours and exotic ingredients.
Wacky ideas and tongue-in-cheek names are the kitchen's stock-in-trade, so expect an assortment of off-the-wall creations ranging from 'Pea Shooter and Pippin Tangle' to 'Bengal Babs' (tandoori-spiced Haloumi kebabs served with smoked almond custard risotto). Elsewhere, 'Bons Bons Pallette' comprises cheese bon-bons on beetroot pickle pavé with warm dill and caraway potato salad, micro leaves and a soubise crush dressing. Desserts are equally outrageous offerings such as 'Boiled Egg and Chubby Soldiers', which is actually 'meringue, mango, passion and diplomat cream served with fat pineapple soldiers and lime leaf sugar'.
The drinks list is as eclectic as the food, with a worldwide selection of fascinating organic and biodynamic wines, beers, ciders, 'juices, nectar and fizz'. Also note the adventurous kid's menu and takeaway facilities.
