Standing amid seventeen acres of tranquil gardens on the shores of Loch Scridain overlooking mountains and sea, is the breathtaking setting for the Tiroran House Hotel, a former 1850 shooting lodge. Scottish Country House Hotel and Island Hotel of the year for both 2013 and 2014, it's a thirty five minute scenic drive from the Craignure ferry terminal on the Isle of Mull. Diners can also expect a memorable gastronomic experience at the restaurant, which has been awarded three prestigious AA Rosettes for its unique cuisine.
Proceedings start with a pre-dinner aperitif and canapés in a small adjoining room, before the main event in the elegant dining room with breathtaking views over the lawn to the loch. Heading the kitchen brigade is talented chef Katie Mackay who makes excellent use of the kitchen garden for fresh produce, alongside trusted suppliers on the island.
Menus change daily to showcase impeccable ingredients in the shape of Sound of Iona creel caught langoustines with endive salad and hollandaise, or terrine of chicken and foie gras with Jerusalem artichoke puree and cinnamon raisins. Follow on with a main course of fillet of Aberdeen Angus beef, cooked to medium rare, with braised shin, buttered spinach, pureed spinach, golden beetroot and pommes dauphine or fish fans might opt for the bouillabaisse of Scottish seafood with rouille. Desserts are pretty assemblages, witness rhubarb panna cotta with a blood orange salad or dark chocolate tart with double cream ice cream. To complement the food is a well-researched wine list of interesting bins from around the globe.
Tiroran House Hotel offers guests an outstanding experience with its abundance of wild life, buzzards and eagles fly overhead, there's sightings of passing otters and dolphins in the loch and red deer visit their gardens.
