Review on The Chef's Table
A must for all foodies, The Chef's Table was launched in the Spring of 2014 and is already picking up awards for its innovative cuisine. This gem of a restaurant is hidden away in a little side street in the heart of Chester city, leading away from the Cathedral. Inside, it's an intimate affair with unclad wooden tables and rustic chairs overlooked by the open kitchen. Walls exhibit original art from up-and coming local artists, shelves are displayed with second-hand cookery books for sale and napkins tied with parcel string, all add to the homely atmosphere.
The Chef's Table is owned by Tom Hughes and Chef Liam McKay, who climbed the culinary ladder at restaurants such as the Chester Grosvenor, Joseph Benjamin and Upstairs at the Grill. Liam champions ethically sourced quality ingredients from trusted artisanal producers, for an innovative menu that changes on a weekly basis.
Open all day, you are invited to pop in for coffee or tea, with lunch kicking off at 12.00pm and the kitchen pulling out all the stops for its a la carte menu in the evening. Open the show with slow cooked pork belly, grilled Scottish langoustine, bacon powder, roast pineapple and avocado miso or maybe seared Isle of Man scallops, Morcombe Bay shrimp, blood orange, monks beard agretti and boudin noir. Follow on with a main course of roast sirloin beef, slow cooked short ribs, mushroom stroganoff pudding, black rice, wasabi sour cream, salt and vinegar crisp potatoes or from the sea there's roast cod loin, red pepper crust, Isle of Man crab, white asparagus, roast radish, Jersey royals and wild garlic buerre blanc. While desserts are lively ideas, witness hot chocolate fondant paired with popcorn ice cream and caramelised salted popcorn or poached rhubarb, pistachio, blood orange, rosemary, spiced mascarpone, cardamom and Turkish delight ice cream.
Service is efficient and very friendly and there's a well-priced wine list together with a selection of tasty seasonal cocktails and craft beers.
