Review on Pint Shop
An impressive addition to the gastronomic scene of the University city of Cambridge, The Pint Shop is an independent pub and restaurant which opened its doors in November 2013. Set in an elegant listed former office building, it takes inspiration from the numerous beer houses that sprung up as as result of the 1830 Beer Act, that were more commonly known as 'Tom and Jerry Shops'.
On the ground floor is the bar which operates as a very popular local watering hole, with a dining room towards the back overlooking a garden courtyard, with more tables available in an upstairs room. Featuring a muted colour scheme with well spaced wooden tables and chairs set on parquet flooring, there's industrial style lighting and walls bedecked with pictures for sale from local artists.
The kitchen emphasises fresh flavourful British food cooked over real charcoal, kicking off with starters in the shape of confit duck, bean salad, fig and walnut dressing or maybe smoked haddock turnover, cucumber and elderflower salad. Main courses usher in a succulent charcoal spit roast overnight port belly served with flageolet beans and bacon or whole mackerel, confit lemon, red onion and fennel salad. To finish there are tasty desserts such as mini vanilla and white chocolate pot served with shortbread or rhubarb jelly and custard.
To complement the food the Pint Shop has a concise wine list sourced from small European producers, together with 15 craft beers on tap and a fantastic selection of 45 gins.
