Review on The Smokehouse
Kent born chef Mark Sargeant, a former Gordon Ramsey associate of some 13 years opened his second restaurant, a posh fish and chip shop called The Smokehouse in the seaside town of Folkestone in June 2011, just steps away from his successful Rocksalt restaurant. Voted as one of The Times 30 best fish and chips shops in Britain, its part of the regeneration of Folkestone seafront, and takes its name from the 150-year old building it's housed in. Now sporting a modern look with a two-storey, five metre window to make the most of the cobbled Stade and the stunning harbour views, it's a light and airy affair with wooden tables and stools and a giant stainless steel shark hanging from the ceiling.
The kitchen draws on the local larder with fish sourced from day boats off the Kent coast and other produce supplied from small independent farmers. Enjoy a starter of mussel bhajji with cucumber and mint yoghurt or garlic butter baked scallops. Follow on with battered haddock served with chips and lemon wedge or for meat fans there's Kentish pie with mash and mushy peas. To finish there's a selection of delicious ice cream from the award winning Simply Ice Cream Company in Ashford, Kent.
