Review on Oldroyd
After five years as Chef Director of the successful Venetian inspired Polpo group of restaurants, July 2015 saw Tom Oldroyd open his first eponymous venture. Set in the heart of Islington on busy Upper Street just off Camden passage, it's a short walk from the Angel tube station and Islington Green. Spread over two floors, the 40 cover restaurant features an informal café and open kitchen, whilst upstairs there's a cosy bistro with small wooden tables and cream banquette seating.
This genial neighbourhood restaurant offers a daily changing modern European menu using the very best of British seasonal ingredients. Kick off with smoked pork belly and pea croquettas, truffle mayonnaise before a main course of whole roast monkfish, braised fennel and tapenade or maybe lamb and almond meatballs, salsa romesco and pickled garlic. Tempting desserts close the show with a chocolate mousse, salted pistachio praline and raspberries or stone fruit and brioche pain perdu paired with vanilla ice cream.
There's a concise wine list to complement the dishes together with signature cocktails and a refreshing cucumber and peppermint iced tea created by the Rare Tea Company.
