Review on Burnt Truffle
Sibling to AA Restaurant of the Year 2014-2015, Sticky Walnut in Hoole, Chester, Chef/Patron Gary Usher opened a second restaurant in July 2015 called Burnt Truffle. He achieved this by raising £100,000 via the crowdfunding website Kickstarter, which included donations from esteemed chefs such as Neil Rankin, Jesse Dunford Wood and Ashley Palmer-Watts, as well as from the local community. Located in the bustling 'top' village of affluent Heswall on the west of the Wirral Peninsula, the restaurant is set over two floors., occupying the former premises of a Greek restaurant. Featuring a centre-piece sparkling chandelier on each floor, the interiors have been updated with clean lines, decked out in cool colours with plain oak furniture and exposed walls.
Usher whose CV includes stints at The Chester Grosvenor, Chapter One, Chez Bruce and Jamie's Italian has appointed Scott Griffiths to take charge of the kitchen, while he divides his time between the two restaurants. Diners can expect a menu that might open with Razor clam, samphire, fennel, coriander dressing and pink grapefruit or lambs tongue, watercress mayonnaise, goats curd and peas. Moving on there's ox heart, braised celery, skordalia and blackberries or from the sea, stonebass, charred sweetcorn, lemon couscous, tempura oyster and tartare sauce. Desserts are hard to resist with a Black Forest gateau and cassis sorbet or a banana parfait, chocolate and peanut brittle and caramel ice cream.
The concise wine list offers plenty of lively drinking whilst keeping it's prices in check.
