Review on Bryn Williams at Porth Eirias
Occupying a prime spot in the multi-million pound watersports complex on the promenade in Colwyn Bay, Bryn Williams at Porth Eirias opened its doors in the summer of 2015. Bryn made his name in the TV programme, Great British Menu, when as a humble sous chef up against well known chefs, he was chosen to cook the fish course for the Queen's 80th Birthday. Since 2008 he has been the chef patron of the highly regarded Odette's restaurant in Primrose Hill, North West London, not only listed in the Michelin Guide, but it's been awarded three prestigious AA rosettes.
The bistro is set on the promenade with floor to ceiling windows to take in the spectacular views of the beach and the Irish Sea. Inside the large open space shows off its nautical credentials with pretty blue banquette seating next to simple wooden tables and chairs, overlooked by all the action of the open kitchen.
Operating as an all-purpose, all day eating place with its own patio, the kitchen kicks off with breakfast, working its way through to lunch, afternoon tea and dinner, or you are welcome to pop in for a relaxing cup of coffee and piece of cake. The menu offers fairly priced dishes using local seasonal ingredients, with the option of choosing small plates, ideal for sharing or a light snack. You might begin with the game terrine paired with fruit chutney and toast or the salt and pepper squid, spring onion, mint and lime mayonnaise. Follow on with roast skate wing, slow cooked leek, brown shrimp and capers or rib eye steak, Portobello mushroom and confit tomato. There are comforting desserts to finish with an apple crumble and vanilla ice cream or a treacle tart served with clotted cream.
To complement the food there's a concise wine list, tasty cocktails or local beer.
