Review on 28° - 50°
Chef Patron Agnar Sverrisson of Michelin-starred Texture has opened a third branch of his 28° - 50° wine workshop and kitchen brand, this time in the heart of fashionable Mayfair. The name of the restaurant 28° - 50° refers to the latitude where almost all of the world's vineyards are located.
Set over two floors with a ground floor Champagne bar with comfy leather blue seats, there's a choice of between 40 to 50 champagnes. Like its siblings in Fetter Lane and Marylebone Lane, it offers relaxed dining with a rustic décor using reclaimed timber, exposed brick walls and simple oak tables. The spacious basement with an open kitchen provides the perfect space for private parties, and on sunny days there's outdoor terraces to the front and rear of the restaurant for al fresco dining and drinking.
The modern European menu changes regularly featuring dishes such as salt beef, horseradish, mustard and sourdough toast or smoked mackerel, beetroot, horseradish and pickled red onion. When it comes to main courses there's pan fried salmon, salsify, Savoy cabbage, lemon and chive velouté or from the grill, 28 day aged English rib eye with béarnaise sauce. Moreish desserts are tempting, witness a dark chocolate cremeux, peanut and toffee crunch with banana ice cream or pistachio crème brulée, cocoa nib and pistachio brittle.
To accompany the food 28° - 50° has 15 red and 15 white wines available by the glass, carafe or bottle, alongside a collector's list of fine wines from private collections.
