Review on Sea Containers at Mondrian London
The Mondrian London is the first UK boutique hotel from the Morgans Hotel Group, occupying the iconic Sea Containers House originally built as an hotel in the 1970's, but only ever used as offices, it has a commanding position on the south bank of the River Thames. After a multimillion-pound renovation undertaken by Tom Dixon of Design Research Studio in partnership with American-based Morgans, they have taken inspiration from the naval history of the building to evoke the glamour of a 1920's transatlantic liner.
The aptly named Seafood Containers is the signature restaurant within the hotel, a smart modern space with an open kitchen and dark wood tables with gold curved banquette seating. Large windows look out onto Queen's Walk with breathtaking views across the Thames to the north bank.
New York chef Seamus Mullen oversees the restaurant alongside Executive Chef Michael Stenekes and Head Chef Gus Crosby, together they have created a seasonal menu using market fresh and sustainable ingredients. Diners can look forward to starters such as mussels roasted in the clay oven, grille tomatillo sauce, fennel and garlic toast or oven roasted lamb meatballs, soft sheep's milk cheese, cucumber and Moroccan spiced vinaigrette. When it comes to main courses there's duck breast a la plancha, wild mushroom farro, dried cherries, rainbow chard and corn or roasted Mediterranean sea bream and citrus salsa verde, served family style suitable for two or three guests. To conclude there are tempting desserts such as chocolate flourless lava cake, macadamia nuts, poached pears and praline ice cream or roasted apple and pecan crumble served with vanilla ice cream.
Enjoy award winning cocktails at Dandelyan or there's Rumpus, the rooftop bar and lounge, both offering stupendous views of the Thames, as well as the Den for light snacks and drinks during the day.
