Review on Pallant Restaurant
The Pallant Restaurant and café is a calm retreat within the Pallant Gallery, which houses a collection of modern British and International art in an extended Queen Anne, Grade I listed town-house in the heart of Chichester. A relaxed venue, it's an ideal daytime pit-stop for shoppers, office workers and visitors to the town, just a few minutes walk from Chichester Railway Station, the Cathedral and the Market Cross. It is also excellent for special occasions, and has the bonus of an al fresco dining area within a walled courtyard, featuring sculpture displays.
The kitchen is operated by the acclaimed Sussex Pub Company, who own the award-winning Royal Oak in East Lavant, the Crab & Lobster in Sidlesham and The Fox & Hounds in the charming village of Funtington, near Chichester. Head Chef Sam Vickery proposes a modern British menu with European influences that is based around keenly sourced local produce. Open the slate with pan seared scallops and chargrilled rosario on a cauliflower puree, cauliflower pilaff and finished with chorizo oil, before a main course of venison Wellington, pan roasted fillet of venison with a wild mushroom puff pastry parcel, swede fondant, purple sprouting broccoli and a redcurrant jus or fillet of plaice wrapped in Serrano ham served on sautéed crushed potatoes with garlic wilted spinach and crayfish and tomato sauce. Bring the curtain down with indulgent desserts such as white and dark chocolate tiramisu, an Italian classic with a chocolate twist or toffee apple crumble, brandy poached apple with a toffee butterscotch sauce, pistachio crumble topping, caramelised pistachios and green apple sorbet.
The wine on the brief considered list is fairly priced and is also available by the glass.
