Review on Black Roe
Kurt Zdesar owner of the successful Chotto Matte in Soho, has replaced his Bouillabaisse restaurant in Mayfair that opened in 2015, with a new enterprise called Black Roe which launched in March 2016. Zdesar a former director of the global restaurant group Nobu and founder of the Ping Pong chain, has turned his attention to cuisine from the Pacific Rim for his latest venture, which also showcases London's first Poke bar serving classic Hawaiian marinated raw fish, alongside seafood and oysters.
The ground floor restaurant is moodily lit with luxurious blue banquette seating set against wooden tables. Grey walls are adorned with large monochrome portraits of the fisherman and farmers who supply the kitchen, taken by celebrity photographer Seamus Ryan. Downstairs there's a large chef's table seating up to twenty guests, with walls lined with tanks of fresh live seafood, leading through to the open kitchen.
Executive chef of Chotto Matte Jordan Sclare has overseen the menu, which not only includes ultra fresh seafood but sustainable meats cooked on a Kiawe wood grill. Diners can look forward to dishes such as scallop poke, sriracha citrus salsa or beef fillet tataki, sun blush tomatoes, parmesan crisp and salsa picante amongst the appetizers. From the wood grill there's bison rib eye steak, fennel and tomato confit and yuzu soy hollandaise or Cajun style blackened sea bass with pineapple salsa. Desserts conjure up things like apple tatin with milk ice cream or cherry panna cotta with butter biscuit.
There's an extensive global wine list to complement the food with a wide selection available by the glass, as well as a cocktail menu.
