Review on Theo's Simple Italian
Just steps from Earl's Court tube, acclaimed chef Theo Randal who made a big impression with his eponymous restaurant at the Intercontinental in Mayfair, has opened a casual Italian venture called Theo's Simple Italian. Set in a smart redbrick Victorian townhouse, home to the boutique Hotel Indigo London Kensington, it occupies a ground floor space. The dining room is light and bright with curved leather banquette seating in olive green and caramel, pale herringbone wood panelling, turquoise ceramic tiling and low-hanging industrial lights complete the picture.
Serving classic rustic Italian dishes, the menu takes inspiration from Randall's recent cookery book, My Simple Italian. Calamari fritti served with with lemon aioli or maybe crostini topped with white cod mousse are good choices from the cicchetti section. Otherwise head on to the antipasti with marinated Black Angus beef with bulls blood salad, aged balsamic vinegar and Tropea onion followed by a main course of fish stew with red mullet, prawns, squid and crostini. When it comes to desserts there's Theo's signature lemon tart or vanilla sponge cake with Italian Chantilly.
The all-Italian wine list has a good selection of regional bottles alongside craft beer and classic Italian cocktails. There's also a cold counter and specialist delicatessen serving seasonal artisan produce.
