Review on Beach House Restaurant
The driving forces behind the Beach House Restaurant situated on Oxwich Beach are Welsh-born Neil Kedward and his partner Zoe Agar, who already own the award winning restaurant and boutique hotel, The Grove in Narbeth and the Coast Restaurant at Saundersfoot in Pembrokeshire. Occupying a lovely 19th century stone building, formerly The Coalhouse, it has been been tastefully refurbished with rustic wood tables set against caramel coloured chairs, and pretty blue banquette seating decorated with cushions. The pièce de résistance is the unparalleled views the restaurant offers overlooking Oxwich Bay on the stunning Gower peninsular.
Chef-patron and director of the restaurant is critically acclaimed chef Hywel Griffith, who has climbed the culinary ladder at establishments such as The Chester Grosvenor with Simon Radley, Ynyshir Hall, Paul Heathcote's Longridge Restaurant and more recently Head Chef at the Freemasons at Wiswell. Griffith makes the most of the local larder on his doorstep for a menu along the lines of Towy river wild salmon, citrus confit, soy sauce and samphire or Ham hock terrine, caramelised onion, pickled mushrooms and fennel croûtons. Follow on with roast Gower lamb, loin and crispy breast, glazed carrot, creamed potato and mint sauce or lemon sole, brown butter, tender stem broccoli, roasted almonds and lemon. To close the show there's millefeuille, strawberry, basil and avocado ice cream or a refreshing peach melba paired with lemon verbena ice cream.
The well-chosen global wine list hits the target, and there's some lovely options available by the glass. The Beach House Restaurant was the proud recipient of a prestigious Michelin star in the 2020 edition of the Guide.
