Review on Eneko Basque Kitchen & Bar at One Aldwych
Eneko Basque Kitchen & Bar at One Aldwych is the much anticipated restaurant that launched on the 1st September 2016 in the space formerly occupied by Axis for some 19 years. Set within the basement of One Aldwych, a cutting-edge contemporary hotel in the heart of Covent Garden, the Edwardian building was once the offices of the Morning Post.
The restaurant takes its name from highly regarded chef Eneko Atxa, who is renowned for his Bilbao three Michelin-starred Azurmendi Restaurant, voted number 16 in the World's 50 Best Restaurants. It is the first restaurant designed by Museum interior specialists Casson Mann using materials and colours inspired by Eneko's Basque heritage. Bespoke contemporary furniture features chestnut wood tables with white chairs, alongside banquette leather seating in vibrant shades of red. A white ceramic mezzanine is where the bar is located serving an all-Spanish wine list, including wines direct from Eneko's own vineyards, prefect for pre and post dinner drinks.
Menus take a more informal approach to Eneko's Michelin starred restaurant and he has appointed Javi Blanco to lead the kitchen. Traditional Basque cooking is the order of the day with elegantly displayed dishes. From the sea order a starter of tempura of fresh anchovies, aioli and tomato, while meat fans might opt for the Basque chicken liver parfait and Txakoli apple. Equally inventive main courses follow with a cod bizkaina, delicate cod tripe stew in traditional bizkaina sauce and and deep-fried cod bites or seared duck breast, julienne of king oyster mushrooms and pickled red onion. To close the show there's an array of tempting desserts paired with traditional Basque ice cream.
