Review on The Ivy Cafe St Johns Wood

Richard Caring of Caprice Holdings has rolled out another branch of his Ivy Cafe brand, this time in North West London's affluent St John's Wood. It joins siblings in Marylebone, Wimbledon and Clifton in Bristol, as well as his Grills and Brasserie restaurants in Kensington and Chelsea. Décor wise it follows the same format as the other restaurants, created by the well known Brudnizki Design Studio with their trademark antique pewter bar, vintage leather bar stools, marble floor tiling and leather banquette seating. Outside there's Parisian-style, street-tables, perfect for a relaxing drink and bite to eat on a summer day.

Executive chef Sean Burbidge has devised an all day menu that showcases everything from breakfast, elevenses, a full blown lunch or dinner, or maybe just a quick snack with coffee. Typical offerings on the carte include warm crispy duck with five spice dressing, toasted cashews, watermelon, beansprouts, coriander and ginger or crunchy fried prawns, salt and pepper squid with wasabi mayonnaise and miso sauce amongst the starters. Main courses follow in the shape of the Ivy classic shepherd's pie, slow braised lamb shoulder with beef and Wookey Hole Cheddar potato mash or fish fans will enjoy the seared yellowfin tuna with a salad of fennel, clementine, pistachio, black olive and herbs with a citrus dressing. As for dessert, check out the baked apple tart with vanilla ice cream and Calvados flambé or the warm flourless chocolate cake with caramelised banana with vanilla cream and chocolate sauce.

The wine list encompasses the major wine growing regions of the world and the cocktail menu includes offerings like The Ivy Café Royale with Hibiscus gin, sloe infusion, rose water and Cremant as well as Garden of the Abbey, Elderflower vodka, cucumber, apple, lime and cider sparkle.
