Review on Shikumen Shepherd's Bush
Part of a small select group Shikumen's flagship Chinese restaurant is housed within the Dorsett Hotel, an ornate Grade II listed building overlooking Shepherd's Bush Green, that was originally built in 1923 as a cinema. Shikumen meaning 'stone grate' refers to the unique style of housing in Shanghai during the 1940's, which were a combination of Chinese and Western structures. The spacious dining room is a sleek affair featuring handsome oriental wooden dividers and rich polished wood tables set against leather banquettes, with vibrant artwork decorating the walls.
The kitchen serves elegant and inventive Asian cuisine using carefully sourced ingredients showcasing an à la carte menu, alongside an extensive selection of exquisite handmade dim sum. Their signature dish is authentic Beijing Peking duck which is carved at the table and served with handmade pancakes and Chinese buns. Other options worth considering would be the pan fried lobster with ginger and spring onion or maybe the Mongolian grilled Iberico pork. Desserts are in keeping, witness green tea crème brulee or passion fruit cheesecake.
There's a carefully compiled wine list to complement the food, or you can sit at the lovely hand-carved wooden bar where tea, cocktails and saké are served.
