Review on Basic Bar Restaurante
Basic Bar Restaurante might be off the beaten track in Palma, but this hidden gem that's been opened since May 2009 is definitely worth seeking out. Set on an unassuming street, it's a short walk from the Avenidas' branch of the El Corte Inglés department store. Inside it has a smart contemporary décor with plain painted walls decorated with an ever changing display of pictures by local artists. Floor to ceiling windows offer a view of a stylish Oriental themed garden with tall potted plants standing on white pebbles.
Chef patron Gerhard Berktold formerly head chef Mallorca's 5-star St Regis Mardavall pulls in fresh ingredients and local produce to produce innovative dishes with a Mediterranean flair. Serving three and five course tasting menus as well as an à la carte option, the daily changing lunchtime menu of three courses, bread and a drink offers exceptional value.
As a curtain raiser there's crispy goat's cheese with marinated pumpkin or carpaccio of Wagyu beef served with foccacia, sundried tomatoes and olives. Main courses embrace turbot fillet with vegetables and lobster sauce or beef cheeks terrine with sobrasada sauce. Proceedings conclude in style with chocolate and plum cake with yogurt ice cream or créme brulée de maracuyá.
