The Coach House by Michael Caines, an award winning restaurant is set in an enviable position within the glorious grounds of the luxurious boutique Kentisbury Grange Hotel, originally built in 1894 as a gentleman's residence. Located on the edge of Exmoor National Park, it can be found halfway between the historic market town of Barnstaple and the lovely seaside resort of Woolacombe in North Devon.

The glamorous interiors of the restaurant, like those of the hotel have been created by Devon designer Karen Gray. Laid out over two floors with a stunning walnut, copper and marble bar taking centre stage and a glass oak and iron staircase leading to the upstairs elegant lounge built under the eaves. The main dining room features sumptuous cobalt blue crushed velvet chairs and banquette seating set against handmade artisan oak tables on slate flooring, and walls covered with contemporary artwork.

Two-starred Michelin chef Michael Caines MBE has appointed James Checkley as Head Chef, who previously worked at ABode Exeter before joining the three-AA rosette Coach House in 2016. Together they have created an innovative menu making excellent use of the abundance of local and seasonal produce. Among the list of starters you might find Brixham scallop, caramelised cauliflower, cumin velouté or duck liver terrine, quince purée, sauternes jelly and raisins. Main courses move into the realms of Exmoor lamb loin, aubergine, potato fondant, glazed onions and tapenade jus or from the sea there's Cornish cod, scallop, leeks, truffle and chive beurre blanc. Finely crafted desserts close the show with banana parfait, confit lime, butterscotch, and candied peanuts or pistachio soufflé with dark chocolate sauce and pistachio ice cream.
