Review on Ceru
After a series of pop-up restaurants in Fitzrovia, Tower Bridge and Cannon Street, Ceru founders husband and wife Barry and Patricia Hilton opened their first permanent establishment on Bute Street, minutes from South Kensington underground station. Overlooked by an open kitchen with bar stools, diners can sit in the intimate leather clad booths or on the banquette seating covered in beautiful woven tapestries. Outside the restaurant has further seating in the form of unique heated folding benches, should the weather be a little chilly.
The kitchen is open all day from early breakfast, working its way through, lunch, afternoon tea and dinner serving colourful and vibrant dishes inspired by the coastal eastern Mediterranean, using nearly 100 ingredients with over 20 spices and 6 varieties of nuts. Dishes are designed for sharing along the lines of whole grilled garlic prawns with a dried lime and coriander labneh or paprika and lemon marinated grilled cubes of chicken breast, with a herb yoghurt. A popular choice is their lamb shoulder slow roasted for five hours in their secret blend of twelve Shawarma spices, with a pomegranate, fresh mint and pistachio sauce. Their desserts are not to be missed with a dark chocolate mousse, sour cherry and pistachio or flavours of Baklava, cardamom ice cream with a nut brittle and burnt honey caramel. Lunchtime they offer an express platter, guaranteed to be served within twenty minutes of ordering or it is free of charge.
A carefully crafted wine list features Lebanese, Greek and Turkish wines, cocktails, Lebanese beers and a locally brewed Ceru pale ale from Hop Kettle Brewery.
