Review on The Tamburlaine

Named after a play by Christopher Marlowe, The Tamburlaine is a multi-million pound hotel from the Irish group O'Callaghan. Located just by Cambridge railway station, a 45 minute ride from King's Cross, and steps away from the lovely Botanic Garden, it's just a 15 minute stroll into the city centre.

On the ground floor the hotel has the advantage of separate dining areas, a brasserie featuring locally sourced seasonal dishes, a horse-shoe marble topped bar serving classic cocktails taking inspiration from the University and local history, the Garden Room filled with lush foliage where you can enjoy afternoon tea, and the vibrant Steam Deli, where you have the choice of eating in or taking away.

The main brasserie has an Art-Décor inspired theme with pendant lighting, luxurious leather banquette seating, floor to ceiling windows and a glass window so guests can watch all the action of the chefs at work. Taking the reins in the kitchen is Head Chef David Ellams, who joins the restaurant from Cambridge Regional College where he was Head of Programmes for Catering and Hospitality.

Among the list of starters you might find smoked and cured ham hock, pickled vegetables and confit duck yolk or seafood offerings in the shape of crab and cucumber cannelloni, chilli, lime and coriander. Moving on to main courses there's an 8oz of rib eye of rare breed beef from the grill or maybe choose the sea bass with Thai basil mash, chorizo and piquant peppers. Desserts present an enticing mix of flavours, witness iced lemon meringue parfait, confit fennel and cinnamon beignets or pineapple, dried raspberry, white chocolate and mango chilli sorbet.

The Tamburlaine has 155 spacious and elegantly decorated bedrooms should you wish to extend your stay and explore the beautiful historical city of Cambridge further.
