Review on The Oystermen

After a series of pop-ups and an extended residency at The Sampler wine shop in South Kensington, co-founders Matt Lovell and Rob Hampton have opened their first permanent venue on Henrietta Street in the heart of Covent Garden. A simply designed restaurant seating just 26, it features brick walls and white tiling, filament lighting and an open kitchen towards the rear, where you can watch the chefs in action.

Weymouth born chef Alex Povall mans the stoves having previously earned his culinary stripes in acclaimed restaurants such as Angela Hartnett's Café Murano and Merchant's Tavern. Fresh oysters and seafood delivered daily is the business of the day, alongside house-cured smoked and pickled fish and shellfish platters. Non piscine alternatives include an antipasti platter of Suffolk salami and smoked mutton, and cheese that includes the likes of Baron Bigod Brie and Lincolnshire Poacher Cheddar.

The wine list has been carefully curated to complement the dishes and there's an exclusive oyster stout brewed in collaboration with Canopy Beer Co. Happy hour runs from 3 to 5pm and offers good value with six oysters and a glass of fizz for £10.
