Review on Core by Clare Smyth
Core by Clare Smyth is one of the most hotly anticipated openings of 2017, located a short walk from Notting Hill Gate tube in the building that formerly housed Notting Hill Brasserie. Born in Northern Ireland Clare's career path includes high profile names such as Alain Ducasse and Thomas Keller, and more recently she was the Chef Patron of Gordon Ramsay Royal Hospital Road, where she was the first female British chef to hold and retain three Michelin stars.
Converted from three Victorian terraced houses, inside you will enter the restaurant through an 18 seater cocktail bar. The elegant dining room is as sleekly groomed as can be using natural materials in a palette of green, aubergine, almond, copper and gold. A window overlooks a feature living wall of plants and a 3.2 metre walnut table seating 10 guests has a prime spot, to take in all the action of the chefs through the huge glass-panelled kitchen.
Clare has built a special relationship with trusted suppliers to provide only the finest ingredients for dishes designed with creativity and a respect for the seasons. Open your account with crab royale, steamed Colchester crab doughnut and consommé before a main course of oxtail stuffed Roscoff onion, beef short rib or from the sea skate, Morecambe bay shrimps, Swiss chard and brown butter. Artistically displayed desserts close the show with chocolate and hazelnut crémeux, salted caramel or pain perdu, peaches and cream.
2015 Acorn Award winner Sommelier Gareth Ferreira has overseen the first-class wine list featuring over 400 bins from Burgundy, Bordeaux northern Italy, and California. The restaurant is the recipient of two prestigious Michelin stars as well as five AA Rosettes.
