Review on Suvlaki Shoreditch
Buoyed by the success of Suvlaki in Soho, the Shoreditch branch opened its doors in July 2007 on vibrant Brick Lane in East London. It's a cosy venue designed in a similar fashion to its older sibling by the award winning AfroditiKrassa studio, featuring dark blue walls, half fluted columns and a graffiti styled wall. Banquette seating has comfy cushions set against tables with distressed blue marble tops, and there's a further dining room at the back housing an old reclaimed church bench seating six, overlooked by the open kitchen.
Executive chef is Alfred Prasad, who was the youngest Indian chef to receive a Michelin star at the age of 29 at the Tamarind restaurant in Mayfair. Presenting a series of tapas style Greek dishes using the robata grill, there's much to enjoy including offerings like Mount Olympus wild boar sausage with smoked aubergine, alongside mussels served with giant cous cous, samphire, carrot and celery sauce. Desserts stay close to home with a chocolate biscuit cake paired with homemade Greek coffee ice cream or 'Samos to Soho' cheesecake, wild honey, candied ginger and orange meringue.
The all-Greek wine list includes bottles from the Kokotos estate as well as small producers across the country. Suvlaki also has a selection of craft beers from Greek Microbreweries including Nissos Pilsner and a Marea Ale.
