Review on The Star Inn The Harbour
The Star Inn The Harbour sees Michelin-starred chef Andrew Pern returning to his roots with the opening of his latest venture in June 2016, located in the picturesque old fishing port of Whitby on the North Yorkshire coast. Occupying the building that once housed the tourist information centre, just steps from the harbour, it's the fourth restaurant from Andrew Pern, joining his Michelin-starred The Star Inn at Harome, Star Inn the City and Mr P's Curious Tavern, both in York.
Set on a pedestrian area, there's stunning views across the harbour to the abbey, while inside the upmarket nautical interiors have been created by designer Rachel McClane. Tongue and groove wallpaper adorns the conicial ceiling with overhead ropes, sails and bespoke lighting and the walls are decorated with canvases from local artists. Other design features to look out for is the giant lobster from Whitby sculptor Emma Stothard and the octopus door handles from James Godbold at Egton Bridge.
Fish from the day boats shows up strongly on the menu, but there are non-piscine alternatives including chicken liver pâté, 'Goosegog' relish, English peashoots and Melba toasts among the starters and for a main course, deer and juniper cottage pie, Wensleydale crust, and citrus carrots. Otherwise choose one of their excellent fish dishes starting with deep-fried calamari and squid ink aioli followed by halibut steak caesar-style, parmesan cheese, smoked bacon and anchovies. Enjoy desserts from the delightful Ice Cream Parlour alongside old favourites such as apple and blackcurrant crumble.
The bar is at the hub of the restaurant where you can enjoy 'Pernshire' wine by the glass and cocktails such as Salty Perndog, gin, dry vermouth, grapefruit juice and a sprinkle of salt.
