Review on Wreckfish Bistro
After a successful £200k Kickstarter campaign chef and restaurateur Gary User opened Wreckfish Bistro in the heart of Liverpool, six years after the launch of Sticky Walnut in Chester, two years after Burnt Truffle in Heswall and just eight months after Hispi in Didsbury, Greater Manchester. Occupying what was once a derelict Ropewalks building on the corner of Slater Street and Seel Street, the city centre restaurant is named after a type of fish that lives at the bottom of the sea. The two-storey premises has been beautifully renovated featuring industrial elements and exposed brick walls, with an open kitchen overlooking a communal table and benches on the ground floor.
This is an all-day set up, running from early morning breakfasts through to lunch and dinner. Dishes from the dinner menu include starters such as glazed chicken wing, aged feta, watermelon and honey or from the sea grilled mackerel fillet, burnt apple, labneh, za'atar, cucumber and dill. Main courses move into the realm of braised beef featherblade, mushroom purée, truffle and parmesan chips or steamed plaice fillet, lardo, smoked sweetcorn and turnip. Racking up the comfort factor are desserts like warm marmalade sponge served with vanilla ice cream or salted caramel tart and whipped cream.
The well-pitched service is friendly and welcoming and there's a warm buzz to the place, and the wine list is a carefully chosen selection of bottles from across the globe.
